A good boss ensures that there aren’t any issues in any working environment. A great boss, however, takes an active role in improving a workspace for everyone they’ve got under their wing.

Good leadership can be the deciding factor between a thriving business and a failing one. Therefore knowing exactly how to act and speak to your employees is as important as focusing on the numbers and turning a profit, if not more so, for the group of people you’re working is responsible for daily operations, without which any company would fail.

1. Find Ways to Motivate Your People

There may be days when productivity drops at your workplace. The worst thing you can do, in this case, is to assign blame by pointing out poor performance- especially in front of the whole team!

A great boss knows that fluctuating performance levels are to be expected from time to time. What you should do is work with your team to help with their professionalism and productivity. Communicate openly and partner up with your employees in order for you to tackle challenges.

Most importantly, ask them about blocking issues. Getting to the root of the problem sooner will help you deal with it more efficiently, ensuring that your operations will be back on track in no time. Listen to their opinions and encourage them to come up with solutions!

2. Communicate Clearly, Professionally, and Often

Communicating with your employees shouldn’t be reserved only for when things go poorly! When your team is doing a great job, it’s your duty to highlight what’s working. Giving accurate feedback, even if it’s a quick little note as you’re passing by someone’s workspace will let them know that their efforts are acknowledged and appreciated.

By doing so you might also catch problems before they’re fully-fledged. Say someone is about to make a mistake. By ensuring that you have a constantly open line of communications you might notice it early on, or the person might feel comfortable around you to ask for directions before they reach the finish line.

3. Take Time to Develop Employees and Their Careers

Companies should always look for loyal employees that represent their values. As such, it is a company’s job to help a person reach their maximum potential.

Bad bosses who start off with the assumption that their employees do not care about advancing their careers and are just looking for a paycheck have a lot to lose. The people around them will likely tell that they’re stuck in a dead-end job, so their loyalties may falter.

Signing your employees up for courses and conferences is a must if you have the budget, but you should aim to develop them every day, not just on occasion. Have them focus their work depending on their strengths but make sure to also challenge them from time to time. Let them know that you want them to exceed expectations and motivate them to do so.

4. Delegate Whatever You Can, Whenever You Can

It’s good to let your employees take the helm from time to time. It will not only teach them valuable skills, but they’ll also see how much trust you put in them.

By delegating as often as possible, you’ll allow your team to engage with new possibilities. Of course, let them know that your door is always open and that they can come to you with any questions. It’ll show them that you have their back by being willing to give them more authority and autonomy.

5. Create Partnerships With Your People

Some bosses think that they should attempt to become friends with all of their employees in order to create a positive work environment. Sure, you can organize laid back company events to help build friendship, but you need to work on cultivating a sense of camaraderie every day, too.

When your team thinks it’s fun to come to work, they’ll become more productive and engaging. Share the success of your company with them and make sure they’re always aware of how their hard work impacts your business.

6. Don’t Forget to Acknowledge Good Performance

You’ve probably spoken about an employee’s performance in a private setting at work- nothing wrong with that. But you should consider the benefits of acknowledging them publicly too. It goes without saying (but we’ll say it anyway) don’t embarrass them by pointing out mistakes in front of others.

No, what we mean is that you should ensure that the rest of the team knows whenever anyone has done something good for the company. You might have some slow days from time to time, so don’t worry about not finding a topic to talk about.

Even the smallest of gestures will increase productivity for that day and your employee will know that they’ll always have you cheering for them.

7. Build Bridges of Trust

Nobody likes thinking that others find them untrustworthy. By opening up two-way communications in the office, you’ll show the people who work for you that you don’t think of them as mindless drones.

Be honest and open and, most importantly, show them that you trust them. Don’t micromanage their work. Nobody likes a boss that is breathing down their necks. If you do find that they’re making mistakes, talk to them instead and offer further training. Let them take care of their projects in ways that work for them instead of insisting on cookiecutter methods.
