Your Car

Between gas, maintenance, insurance, and repairs, cars are major expenses even after you’ve finished paying them off.

If you and your partner each own one then those are two major expenses during retirement. Are you sure you want to hold on to both? A better idea is to sell one of them and rely on just one. After all, now neither of you need to drive for work in opposite directions every morning.

If the public transport in your area is good, take advantage of it! If not, there are a lot of rideshare services available all across the U.S. so you’ll never have to worry about getting around affordably!

Old Computers and Cellphones

Everyone is a little bit of a hoarder, right? Admit it, how many old computers and cellphones have you kept for… actually, for no good reason, despite buying newer, better models to replace them?

If you’re downsizing there’s no point in bringing them over to your new place and since they’ll only collect more dust, it’s time to sell them. You never know how much they could go for at Best Buy. The retailer’s Trade-In service could get you a Best Buy gift card for their value.

On the other hand, you could try Flipsy, Amazon Trade-In, Gazelle, or other similar websites. How much you’ll get depends on your old device’s age and condition.

I have old record albums from the ’40’s, 50’s, 60’s, and 70’s. Where can I find out their value, and where can I sell them?

    1. Unless they are in VERY good condition, i.e. not played, let alone played to death like I know my albums were, the value is very little. Find an independent record store in your area (bingoole it) and ask them, bring them a list.

  2. Not very impressed with this article. Author seems to think we all move into a 500 square foot apartment. The last thing I will be getting rid of is my musical instruments and favorite old music, my treadmill, my gardening equipment, etc. Why not just write an article titled “how to host an estate sale and sell off everything you own.”

  3. Luanne – I tend to agree with you. This article should read what to sell when you have to move into assisted living….
