Federal Holidays and Bank Processing Timelines
The federal calendar designates the second Monday of October as Columbus Day and Indigenous Peoples’ Day. On Monday, October 12, 2026, the Federal Reserve payment rails and commercial banking branches will pause operations.
This federal holiday does not delay Social Security deposits for October. The earliest Wednesday distribution window opens on October 14, two full days after banks resume normal clearinghouse operations.
While the SSA transmits payment files to financial institutions ahead of time, your bank controls when funds post to your available balance. Traditional brick-and-mortar banks generally make direct deposits available by 9:00 AM on the scheduled Wednesday.
Certain digital banks and credit unions offer early direct deposit features that post funds up to two days ahead of schedule. Beneficiaries using these institutions may see their deposits clear on Monday or Tuesday of their payment week.
Never rely on early deposit perks to cover critical automated withdrawals or mortgage drafts. Processing timing can fluctuate based on settlement speeds, network maintenance, or local holiday schedules.
